The Las Cruces Horse Trials was great - the best footing ever. We ended up with only two horses but they were super:
Anne Wrinkle and Poet 2nd in Beginner Novice
Tom Angle and Viking 2nd in Open Training

Annie Veenstra went with us and participated in the Pony Club Fun Rally.

Everyone involved had a blast at the Caza Ladron Hunt Races this weekend. 30+ horses and riders competed in all kinds of fun races and then had a traditional Hunt "Breakfast" for time to reminisce over the day's adventures.

Vanessa Waltz Benefit

The Vanessa Waltz Benefit held at Goose Downs Farm last Sunday was great fun and a great fundraiser for Vanessa.

The show generated close to $2000 for Vanessa to help her in her fight for health.

We would like to thank Trudy Glefke and Lynn Clifford for donating their judging.

And to thank the volunteers who made the show possible:
Lisa Vesper, Janet Horton, Phoebe, Suzanne and Todd Cole, Lindsay Lechner, Debbie Walker, Calyn Allen, Annie Magill, Barb Olson, Caroline Stevenson, Lisa Reader, Lisa Bessone, Laura Kober and Laura Simpson's Tomas'. Many jobs, many smiles and record time!

Also, many thanks to Holly at Barn Dogs and Tina at Eldorado Country Pet for the wonderful prizes, especially wonderful were the buckets in various barn colors that Vanessa had made.

Some of the winners:
Yanchen And Rinchen Rotto who tied in the Leadline Class
Debbie Walker and Aurora in 2 of the 3 Dressage Classes
Shelley Phillips and Portofino in the Open Hunter Equitation
Laura Mullane in the Jumper Derby
Evalyn Bemis and Rolle Red Beans in the 3' Jumper Derby
Janet Horton and Ruffles River in the 2' Event Derby

St John's HT

Who knew that we would go to St John's( April 16th-17th) for the best weather yet! Notorious for horrible conditions St John's fooled us by being warm, sunny and gorgeous.

We had a fun and successful competition as well. With six horse competing:

Adrian Burgess placed 1st on Highlander in Sr Beginner Novice.

Keda Holland and True Dynamite were 2nd in Sr Training. This is Keda and True's return to competition after a long break and we are thrilled to have them at Goose Downs after so long.

Polly Leach-Lychee and Big Sur were 2nd in Sr Pre-Comp. Polly and Sur's 1st ever event together.

Keda and Alymende came 5th in Sr Pre-Comp. Alymende's debut as well. Lorna Burgess completed at Sr Novice, despite a knee injury, with Wrambling Rose.

The Tucson HIT'S Show (March 1-6 2011) was great fun. Everyone won good prizes. We were especially pleased with Country Girl and Claire as they canceled the Pony Jumper Division and they had to go head to head with the big kids. They more than held their own and were in the ribbons almost every class. Missed the jump-off in one class as her saddle and Claire went off to the side over the last fence.

Carli and Elle did great in their classes even winning one the last day. On to Flintridge Horse Trials (March 12-13, 2011) in downtown Pasadena. Tom and Alloutte finished on their dressage score, as did Claire and Waylon. The other pairs had a hiccup here and there but everyone finished and most in the ribbons. We certainly left knowing what needed work.

Then we were on to 3 Day Ranch (these two venues, for very different reasons, are among my favorites anywhere). Homework done, Claire and Alygator, Tom and Alouette competed in the Open Novice and with nothing added to their dressage scores of 27.4 and 30.9 respectively had a great weekend. Claire and Waylon moved back to Training for a 7th place finish. Carli and Elle finished on their dressage score and came 4th in the JYOP division. Our super star pony had a R&R weekend.

Now we are based at Galway (Southern California Equestrian Center) for the duration. This week we have the Event Derby then the big Galway and home on the 4th of April. More from Goose Downs West as it happens.

Las Cruces Schooling HT - February 19th - 20th, 2011

Ahh Las Cruces... the warmer, windier alternative. Goose Downs had seven horses from pre-Comp to Training but we would have gladly been there with one horse in order to enjoy the warmth.

This is our "shake out the rust" Event in the early spring and I am always glad we go to find out what we forgot. And we did from Alouette’s blanket to Tom’s riding clothes - Oh MY! But the horses were great and did their jobs well. We lost the entire Parker family to flu and Claire did not get to finish out of her 1st and 3rd positions from Saturday. Tom and Alouette finished 3rd despite borrowed clothing. Annie and Spider were absolute stars as Annie cantered her first course ever to collect her Pre-comp Ct 1st place ribbon. Then on Sunday she schooled around the cross-country course. Wow. Thank goodness for Stephanie and Jiggy – they looked like they had been going all winter for a 1st in Training. Stephanie’s young horse got good mileage, finished 2nd and did not sell Stephanie any real estate.

So thank you to all the people who work so hard to put this on. Goose Downs appreciates you.

Sally O’Connor at Goose Downs - January 23rd, 2011

Well the frostbite clinic, Sally O’Connor’s late winter visit to Goose Downs, was in fact balmy compared to the other weather we have had. Ten riders worked on their dressage over two days preparing for the early season opener at Las Cruces in February. Sally teaches all levels of riders and no matter how snow-bound and out of shape horses and riders were everyone came away with some improvement and the satisfaction that comes from that improvement.

We look forward to Sally’s return in May and again in August. Her clinic information and applications will be available 30 days before each clinic.
