Horse Retirement Program

Goose Downs is now offering a service that our own horses have benefitted from over the years. We will be taking in retirees to live out their lives under our care. When we started Goose Downs over 20 years ago, one of our plans was to have turnout acreage for our retired competitive horses and our broodmares and babies. Over the years, it has been our pleasure to give these treasured horses homes and care as they age. Now, there are fewer of our own horses and we have decided that we can do for other people’s horses what we have done for our own.

We are offering several areas where horses can live in small herds of 3 to 5 horses. We have three level fields of approximately 5 acres each with run in sheds and one field approximately 10 acres that has more rugged hilly terrain.

The care that the horses receive will be multi-level:

Basic Care – Horses will be fed grass hay twice a day (for horses that need it, we will feed a grass/alfalfa mix). These horses will be checked twice a day. Horses will be handled for routine vet and farrier work (see Boarding agreement for this schedule). The cost is $350 per month

Premium Care - Horses will receive grain once a day (supplements supplied by owner will be fed at this time) in addition to twice daily or free choice hay. Premium Care Horses will, two or three times a week, have their feet picked out and thrush treatment applied as necessary. Significant cuts and scrapes will be attended to as needed. This level of care also includes blanketing and un-blanketing in winter and fly spraying or fly-sheeting in summer using blankets/sheets supplied by owner. The cost is $500 per month.

By special arrangement, horses that need to be stabled to deal with acute health issues can be housed and treated in accordance with the vet’s recommendation. Those costs are figured on an individual basis. We are starting this service immediately and look forward to looking after your horses in their golden years.
